Our Mission

The Massachusetts Society of Municipal Conservation Professionals (MSMCP) is a non-profit organization of municipal conservation professionals serving our peers by fostering connections, sharing resources, and supporting professional growth. MSMCP also engages in state-level policy discussions and advocates for regulatory improvements.

When conservation professionals connect through MSMCP, they gain access to: a statewide network of expertise, resources, and support in delivering the knowledge and advocacy needed for effective conservation work. Together, we:

  • Foster Connections. Through regular events and workshops, MSMCP creates opportunities for conservation staff to network, share experiences, and learn from each other

  • Share Resources. Our online platform provides practical tools, documents, and best practices for office management, wetland regulations, land stewardship, and community outreach.

  • Advocate. MSMCP coordinates efforts to advocate for adequate municipal staffing and works with conservation professionals to identify and promote improvements to wetland regulations.

  • Support Professional Growth. Through monthly workshops and periodic networking opportunities, we help conservation professionals develop their skills and advance their careers.

  • Bridge Municipalities and the State. We channel the collective wisdom of municipal conservation staff to inform state-level policy discussions and regulatory improvements.

About MSMCP

The Massachusetts Society of Municipal Conservation Professionals (MSMCP) was formed in 1984 to serve and support municipal conservation staff and to work to raise the level of professionalism through the exchange of information, the presentation of technical and scientific information, the promotion of professional staffing for all towns within the Commonwealth, and the encouragement of dialog among contiguous and regionally related Conservation Commissions and their staff.

MSMCP takes an active role in reaching out to communities in need of staff, offering advice on shared positions, establishing new positions, and training new personnel. Whenever possible, MSMCP can provide job descriptions and salary levels.

Through its network, MSMCP is committed to initiating and coordinating cooperative projects among staff in regionally related areas. In addition, MSMCP collaborates with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MA DEP) and the Massachusetts Association of Conservation Commissions (MACC) through joint outreach and workshop programs.
